How do I prepare for the conversation?

First, let's make sure your tech is ready to go. Click JOIN from your home screen, then select Compatibility to run a series of quick tests. These will check your computer settings, microphone, speakers, and internet connection. We highly recommend doing this at least 1 hour before your scheduled conversation - this gives you plenty of time to troubleshoot if needed! If you run into any issues with the tests, try the troubleshooting tips we provide. Still having trouble? Just message our support team through the HELP icon and we'll get you sorted out.

Now for the fun part - preparing for the actual conversation! While your Boomalang speaker will guide the discussion using the Discussion Topics your instructor has provided, it's always helpful to think of a few questions beforehand. This can make the conversation flow more naturally and help you feel more engaged. You might also consider jotting down some helpful phrases like how to say “slow down please” or “can you please repeat?”, though the speaker should also intuitively be making these adjustments in real time as part of their training.

Feeling a bit nervous? That's totally normal! Take some deep breaths and remember - Boomalang exists to foster an atmosphere of judgement-free play. After the first minute or two, most students find themselves settling in and actually having fun with their speaking partner.

BOTTOM LINE

This isn't about being perfect or avoiding mistakes. It's about taking chances and playing in a judgment-free space. Our speakers are experienced at helping students feel comfortable, so don't worry about stumbling over words or finding yourself at a loss - pushing through those moments is exactly the point!
